Concrete bridge under construction
Build Division / Transport Earthworks

Transport &
Earthworks.

Provincial bridges, river crossings, canals and mass earthworks. Work that gets built in a live river, under traffic, or in a season that will not wait.

The Discipline

Heavy Civils
In The Field.

Heavy civils is the discipline where the site dictates the method. A river bridge is governed by the flood season, a road widening by the traffic accommodation, a canal by the irrigation calendar. Our long relationship with the KZN Department of Transport has been built on getting those constraints right before the first machine moves.

The scope runs from bulk earthworks and layerworks through to the finished deck: substructure, superstructure, approach works, guardrails and rehabilitation. We work almost entirely under the GCC suite, priced to SANS 1200 and constructed to the provincial standard specifications.

Scope Of Works

What Our Civils Teams Build.

Every item below is scope our own teams have executed on provincial and municipal contracts.

Bridges & River Crossings

  • Reinforced concrete river bridges, pedestrian bridges and stock crossings
  • Bridge widening and deck extension under live traffic
  • Piled, spread-footing and caisson foundations in river beds
  • Abutments, wing walls, piers, headstocks and bearing shelves
  • In-situ and precast deck construction, parapets and expansion joints
  • Causeways, low-level drifts and vented crossings

Earthworks & Layerworks

  • Bulk excavation, cut-to-fill and mass earthworks platforms
  • Selected, subbase and base layerworks to specified density
  • Rock excavation, blasting through approved subcontract, and rippable cut
  • Terracing, benching and slope stabilisation
  • Gabion, reno-mattress and retaining structures
  • Topsoil stripping, stockpiling and site rehabilitation

Roads & Access

  • Access roads, haul roads and internal estate roads
  • Surfacing: seal, asphalt and concrete paving through specialist subcontract
  • Kerbing, channels, sidewalks and traffic islands
  • Guardrails, road furniture, signage and road markings
  • Traffic accommodation, detours and stop-and-go management
  • Road rehabilitation, patching and shoulder repair

Canals & Drainage

  • Lined and unlined irrigation and drainage canals
  • Stormwater reticulation, catchpits, headwalls and outlet structures
  • Culverts: box, portal and pipe, cast in situ or precast
  • Attenuation ponds, energy dissipators and scour protection
  • River training, erosion protection and gabion revetments
  • Subsoil drainage, fin drains and French drains

Services & Relocations

  • Wet and dry services relocation ahead of road and bridge works
  • Water and sewer diversions under municipal supervision
  • Sleeves, ducts and cable crossings
  • Coordination with electricity, telecoms and pipeline authorities
  • Temporary supply maintenance during diversion
  • As-built recording of relocated services

Working In Live Conditions

  • Traffic accommodation designs and approved TMPs
  • River works programmed around flood season and gauged flows
  • Coffer dams, dewatering and temporary works design
  • Environmental management plans and watercourse protection
  • Community liaison, local labour and local subcontract obligations
  • Night work and weekend possessions where the route cannot be closed

Method

Building A Bridge In A Live River.

01

Programme against the season

Substructure work in a river bed is scheduled into the low-flow window. Getting that wrong costs a season, so it is decided before tender price is confirmed.

02

Temporary works and diversion

Coffer dams, diversion channels and dewatering designed and signed off, with traffic accommodation in place before the road is touched.

03

Foundations and substructure

Excavation to founding, inspection, then bases, piers, abutments and wing walls. Founding conditions in a river bed frequently differ from the borehole log, so early exposure matters.

04

Deck construction

Falsework or precast beams, deck reinforcement and pour, then parapets, joints, surfacing and drainage.

05

Approaches and reinstatement

Approach fills, layerworks, guardrails, road furniture, then rehabilitation of the working area and river bed.

Capacity

Plant & Teams.

We self-perform the work that carries the risk and subcontract the rest to an approved vendor list. What follows is the plant and capability this discipline draws on.

  • Excavators, dozers, graders, rollers and articulated dump trucks
  • Concrete placing plant and mobile cranes for deck and beam work
  • Dewatering pumps, well-points and coffer dam materials
  • Falsework and deck formwork systems
  • Survey instruments and machine-control setting out
  • Traffic accommodation equipment and temporary signage
