Reinforced concrete dome roof on a circular water reservoir
Build Division / Mining Infrastructure

Mining
Infrastructure.

Water infrastructure and heavy civils for mining and heavy industry, built to the standard a mine's own engineering department will audit.

The Discipline

What A Mine
Actually Needs.

Mines do not usually need a contractor to mine. They need someone who can build the water storage, the pipelines, the heavy foundations and the platforms that keep the operation running — and who will work to the mine's permit system without argument.

That is where Unicon fits. The 10ML post-tensioned reservoir with a dome roof at Thabazimbi for Anglo American is the same structure type we have built repeatedly for water boards and municipalities, delivered to a mining client's standards and audit regime.

Scope Of Works

What We Build On A Mine.

Water, concrete and earthworks — the infrastructure around the operation.

Mine Water Infrastructure

  • Raw, process and potable water reservoirs, including post-tensioned structures
  • Dome and flat roof storage with access, ventilation and instrumentation
  • Pump stations, booster stations and abstraction works
  • Bulk pipelines, reticulation and pressure testing
  • Fire water storage and pump house structures
  • Dust suppression supply and wash-down water systems

Water Management & Compliance

  • Dirty water containment, pollution control dams and cut-off drains
  • Silt traps, settlers and sediment control structures
  • Effluent handling and treatment structures
  • Separation of clean and dirty water systems
  • Water use licence infrastructure and monitoring points
  • Rehabilitation and closure-related water works

Heavy Concrete & Foundations

  • Plant, crusher, mill and conveyor foundations
  • Machine bases, plinths and vibration-critical structures
  • Retaining walls, bunds and containment structures
  • Silos, bins and hopper support structures
  • Workshop, store and change-house buildings
  • Substation and MCC building structures

Earthworks & Platforms

  • Bulk earthworks, terracing and plant platforms
  • Haul road construction, upgrading and drainage
  • Stockpile pads, ROM pads and hardstands
  • Slope stabilisation, gabions and erosion protection
  • Trenching for pipelines, cables and services
  • Site rehabilitation and reshaping

Working To Mine Standards

  • Mine Health and Safety Act compliance and site-specific inductions
  • Permit-to-work, isolation and lock-out systems
  • Vehicle and pedestrian segregation on operating sites
  • Fatigue management and shift arrangements where required
  • Client audit participation and corrective action close-out
  • Environmental controls to the mine's authorisation conditions

Quality & Assurance

  • Concrete testing, cube results and pour records for every structure
  • Watertightness testing of retaining structures
  • Weld, coating and NDT records through approved subcontractors
  • Survey verification and as-built documentation
  • Data books, O&M manuals and handover packs
  • Defects liability support during operation

Track Record

What We Have Actually Built.

Straight from our project database, not a brochure. Contract values are shown as bands.

Our mining record is specific rather than broad: a 10ML post-tensioned reservoir with a dome roof for Anglo American at Thabazimbi, and works for Safal Steel at Cato Ridge. What we bring to a mine is the water and heavy-concrete capability behind the rest of this portfolio, not a claim to be a mining contractor.

Method

How We Work On An Operating Site.

01

Induction and permit systems first

Nothing moves until our people are inducted and the permit, isolation and access arrangements are agreed with the mine's own systems.

02

Plan around production

Access routes, delivery windows and lifting operations are programmed so that construction traffic never competes with mine traffic.

03

Build to the mine's specification

Mining clients audit. Method statements, testing and records are prepared to be inspected, not to be filed.

04

Test and commission

Watertightness, pressure and functional testing with the mine's engineering department present.

05

Hand over a documented asset

As-builts, data books and O&M documentation that the mine's asset register can actually use.

Capacity

Plant & Teams.

We self-perform the work that carries the risk and subcontract the rest to an approved vendor list. What follows is the plant and capability this discipline draws on.

  • Purpose-made circular and panel formwork for reservoir walls
  • Post-tensioning capability through established specialist suppliers
  • Concrete placing plant, pumps and curing equipment
  • Earthmoving, compaction and haul road plant
  • Mobile cranes for dome, plant and steelwork installation
  • Pipe-laying, welding and pressure-testing equipment
