Bulk water is the largest part of what Unicon does and has been since the mid-nineties. Reservoirs, treatment works, pump stations and pipelines — the structures that have to hold, and keep holding, for fifty years.

Structures.

A water-retaining structure is unforgiving in a way an office block is not. It either holds or it does not, the defect shows up years after the contractor has left, and the repair costs more than the original pour. That is why our teams are built around concrete discipline rather than programme heroics: mix design, placement, curing, joint detailing and testing are the whole job.

We work as a principal contractor to consulting engineers across KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, most often under the GCC suite for municipal and water board clients. Our people have poured circular and rectangular reservoirs, post-tensioned walls, dome roofs, contact tanks, clarifiers, filter beds and every chamber in between.

What Our Water Teams Build.

The scope below is work Unicon self-performs or directly controls on site. It is deliberately specific: a bill of quantities is priced line by line, and so is our capability.

Reservoirs & Storage

  • Circular and rectangular reinforced concrete reservoirs
  • Post-tensioned circular walls with vertical and circumferential tendons
  • Concrete and steel-plate dome roofs, flat and beam-and-slab roof decks
  • Elevated tanks, break-pressure tanks and balancing dams
  • Reservoir refurbishment, crack injection and internal potable-grade linings
  • Roof waterproofing, access hatches, ladders, handrails and level instrumentation

Water Treatment Works

  • Inlet works, flow-splitting chambers and flocculation basins
  • Sedimentation tanks, clarifiers and lamella settlers
  • Rapid gravity and pressure filter beds, backwash systems and underdrains
  • Chemical dosing buildings, bunded storage and dosing lines
  • Clear water sumps, contact tanks and chlorine contact channels
  • Sludge handling, thickeners, drying beds and return-water systems

Wastewater & Sanitation

  • Waste water treatment works: inlet screening, grit removal and balancing
  • Biological reactors, aeration basins, anoxic zones and secondary clarifiers
  • Package plants, oxidation ponds and maturation ponds
  • Sewer reticulation, rising mains, manholes and sewer pump stations
  • Odour control, effluent discharge structures and outfall works
  • Waste handling and treatment facilities for specialist waste streams

Pipelines & Reticulation

  • Bulk mains in steel, HDPE, uPVC, ductile iron and concrete pipe
  • Trenchless crossings, thrust blocks, anchor blocks and pipe bridges
  • Valve, meter, air-valve and scour chambers
  • Pressure testing, disinfection, swabbing and commissioning
  • Reticulation networks, connections and standpipes
  • Road, rail and river crossings with sleeved or encased carriers

Pump Stations & Mechanical

  • Wet-well and dry-well pump station structures
  • Pump bases, pipework, valves, manifolds and surge protection
  • Booster stations, abstraction works and river intakes
  • Motor control centres, standby generation and telemetry housings
  • Mechanical and electrical installation coordinated with specialist subcontractors
  • Wet testing, commissioning and operator handover

Quality & Handover

  • Concrete cube testing, slump and temperature records for every pour
  • Watertightness testing of retaining structures to specification
  • Joint sealing, waterstop installation and defect-free construction joints
  • As-built survey, data books and operation and maintenance manuals
  • Defects liability support and planned maintenance returns
  • Health and safety file, environmental controls and rehabilitation

Method

How A Reservoir Actually Gets Built.

Site establishment and setting out

Access, laydown, batching arrangements and survey control. On rural sites this includes water supply for the works itself, which is often the first thing we have to solve.

Bulk earthworks and founding

Excavation to founding level, inspection with the engineer, blinding and any founding improvement. Nothing is poured until the founding is signed off.

Floor and wall construction

Base slab in panels with waterstops, then walls in lifts with purpose-made formwork. Mix design, placement rate, vibration and curing are controlled to the specification, not to the programme.

Post-tensioning where specified

Tendon installation, stressing to the designed force with recorded elongations, and grouting. Stressing records form part of the handover pack.

Roof and finishes

Dome, flat or beam-and-slab roof, waterproofing, hatches, ladders, handrails, ventilation and level instrumentation.

06

Testing and commissioning

Fill, stand and watertightness test against the specified drop, disinfection where potable, then wet commissioning with the client's operators present.
