Build Division / Industrial Logistics

Industrial &
Logistics.

Factories, depots, processing plants and the hardstands, foundations and services that make them work.

The Discipline

Plants That
Have To Run.

Industrial work is judged on two things: whether the floor and foundations take the loads they were designed for, and whether construction interrupts production. Both are civil engineering problems more than building problems, which is why an industrial client tends to get the civils team rather than the building team.

Unicon has built and extended factories, depots and processing facilities, including work carried out inside operating plants where the client could not stop running. That kind of contract lives on sequencing, isolation and clean handover of each area.

Scope Of Works

What We Build For Industry.

Heavy floors, heavy foundations, and the services around them.

Plant & Factory Works

  • Factory extensions, upgrades and new production halls
  • Machine foundations, plinths and vibration-isolated bases
  • Heavy-duty industrial floor slabs with specified flatness and abrasion resistance
  • Pipe racks, gantries, platforms and access steelwork
  • Process bunding, chemical containment and drainage separation
  • Works inside operating plants with staged shutdowns and isolation

Warehousing & Distribution

  • Warehouse structures, portal frames and cladding
  • Racking-ready floor slabs and joint layouts
  • Loading docks, dock levellers, aprons and canopies
  • Cold storage structures, insulated panel systems and floor build-ups
  • Office and ablution accommodation within the shell
  • Fire installations, sprinkler provision and compliance

Yards & Hardstands

  • Heavy-duty concrete and paved hardstands for truck and container loads
  • Truck circulation, turning circles and marshalling areas
  • Weighbridge foundations and pits
  • Fuel bays, wash bays and oil separators
  • Access control, gatehouses, fencing and perimeter works
  • Stormwater management, attenuation and discharge compliance

Industrial Water & Effluent

  • Process water storage, reservoirs and tank farms
  • Fire water storage and pump house structures
  • Effluent handling, balancing tanks and treatment structures
  • Trade effluent compliance works and discharge monitoring points
  • Clean-in-place and wash-down drainage
  • Water reticulation, boreholes and abstraction works

Power & Services

  • Substation and MCC building structures
  • Cable trenching, sleeves, ducting and cable racks
  • Standby generation bases, bunds and exhaust provision
  • Compressed air, steam and process pipework support
  • Lighting, small power and reticulation through specialist subcontract
  • Instrumentation, telemetry and control room accommodation

Working In A Live Plant

  • Shutdown planning and hour-by-hour programmes
  • Permit-to-work systems and lock-out procedures
  • Dust, noise and contamination control adjacent to production
  • Food-grade and hygiene requirements where relevant
  • Segregation of construction and operational traffic
  • Area-by-area handback with sign-off

Track Record

What We Have Actually Built.

Straight from our project database, not a brochure. Contract values are shown as bands.

Industrial work is a smaller part of our record than water and civils. The projects below are the ones the database actually shows, and the capability behind them is the same heavy-civil and structural capability that has delivered the rest of the portfolio.

Method

Building Around Production.

01

Understand the operation first

What cannot stop, what can be isolated and when. The programme is written around the plant's constraints, not the other way round.

02

Enabling and temporary works

Access, segregation, temporary services and protection of running equipment before construction starts.

03

Foundations and floors

Founding, machine bases and slabs, with the load cases and tolerances confirmed against the equipment supplier's data rather than assumed.

04

Structure, envelope and services

Frame, cladding and services, sequenced so that each area can be handed back as it completes.

05

Commissioning support

Support to the equipment installers, grouting, alignment and final handover with the operations team present.

Capacity

Plant & Teams.

We self-perform the work that carries the risk and subcontract the rest to an approved vendor list. What follows is the plant and capability this discipline draws on.

  • Concrete placing plant, laser screeds and power floats for industrial floors
  • Mobile cranes and telehandlers for structure and equipment setting
  • Earthmoving and compaction plant for platforms and hardstands
  • Survey equipment for floor flatness and equipment setting-out
  • Dust suppression, screening and containment
  • Site accommodation and permit-controlled access management

Extending Or Building A Plant?

Tell us what cannot stop running. That is usually the constraint that decides the programme and the price.
