Makhathini
Drainage Canal.

Excavation and concrete lining of a 4 km drainage canal serving farmland on the Mjindi Plantations near Jozini, carried out by Unicon under GCC 2010.

Full Contract (construction scope) GCC 2010 Heavy Civils

Project Overview

What Was Built.

The Makhathini Flats in northern KwaZulu-Natal are fertile farmland that depends on managing water in both directions. Unicon excavated and lined a 4 km concrete drainage canal to carry water off the farmland of the Mjindi Plantations near Jozini.

A concrete canal is a long, thin project, so the work is about repeatability: setting out and excavating to line and level, then placing the lining consistently along the whole length. The contract ran for 24 months from November 2014 under GCC 2010.

Unicon’s Appointment

Full Contract
GCC 2010.

Unicon is appointed to carry out the whole of the construction scope under one contract. We price the work, carry the programme and quality risk of our own works, procure and manage our subcontractors and hand over completed works. The contract may sit directly with the employer or under a main contractor or joint venture, which is common on larger public and mining projects.

GCC 2010 is the General Conditions of Contract for Construction Works, the standard contract for civil engineering and water infrastructure.

Where an employer wants design and construction in one appointment, Unicon also offers turnkey and EPC delivery

Questions

About This Project.

How long is the Makhathini drainage canal?

The canal Unicon excavated and lined is approximately 4 km long.

Why line a drainage canal with concrete?

A concrete lining stops erosion and scour, holds the canal's shape and reduces maintenance, especially on flat farmland where water movement is slow and sediment builds up.

Does Unicon build canals and large earthworks projects?

Yes. Canals, bulk earthworks, bridges and drainage structures sit within Unicon's heavy civils work, much of it for provincial and municipal clients.

What contract form was used?

GCC 2010, General Conditions of Contract for Construction Works, as a full contract.
